Launchpad S and Launch Control at the centre of I Am Legion's setup

I Am Legion is a collaborative project between Dutch electronic trio Noisia and British hip hop collective Foreign Beggars. Both groups had many musical interests in common, and through working together on tracks for a while it only seemed natural that they would make an album together. The crossbreed between the two groups became an entity of its own: cue the creation of I Am Legion.

Durability is the most important thing: Launchpads have no parts sticking out, no pots or knobs that can be broken when you slide your laptop in your bag, nothing. We have been traveling with them in our too-full backpacks for years and they've never broken. And the response on them is immediate, and they're very well thought out.

The team works with various outboard synthesizers old and new, including an Access Virus TI, a Roland SH-201, a Korg SV1, and a Eurorack modular system. At the heart of the rig is a Novation 61 SL MkII, providing complete control over Cubase 7 and their MIDI equipment.

Thijs from Noisia tells us that Novation has been central to his workflow for years. “My first experience of Novation was in the early, early days, when the Nova and Supernova were reigning supreme.” Novation has been with Thijs ever since, and not just in the studio: when Noisia perform live, Thijs uses the Launchpad S to control Ableton Live on a MacBook Air. The Launchpad's ruggedness is key to life on tour, as he explains, “durability is the most important thing: Launchpads have no parts sticking out, no pots or knobs that can be broken when you slide your laptop in your bag, nothing. We have been traveling with them in our too-full backpacks for years and they've never broken. And the response on them is immediate, and they're very well thought out."

For the I Am Legion live show, Thijs took this standard Noisia live setup and expanded it with the addition of a Novation Launch Control giving him an extra eight Launchpad pads and 16 knobs for extra control and fine-tuning. "The Launch Control is a nice minimal addition," he says. "We needed some knobs for effects, but didn't want to take a huge unit.”

And that's not all; Martijn (Noisia)’s live keyboard setup consists of a Novation 61 SL MkII keyboard plugged into a Macbook Pro running Cubase 7. He uses the faders on the SL MkII to control effect sends and filters during their performance.
