Launchkey at the heart of will.i.am live rig

LA-based multi-instrumentalist Keith Harris tours with will.i.am, Backstreet Boys and CeeLo Green in the capacity of Musical Director. His task is to make sure all the musical elements of the show run smoothly to give the audience the best possible experience. On a huge tour, performing that role can get more and more intense - particularly as a growing number of human and computer sources become involved.

For will.i.am's recent tour, the Black Eyed Peas frontman decided to go 'all live', with musicians triggering or playing all the sounds that the audience would hear (as opposed to being accompanied by backing tracks). Keith and two other musicians — each with their respective instruments and a laptop rig — played everything live, and it was Keith's task to prepare all the music, digital audio and equipment for the show.

Launchkey 25 packs loads of features into a compact size, and the Launchpad is my main session controller. Both are perfect for life on the road.

Keith chose Novation Launch controllers to power all three rigs. In Keith's drum setup, for example, his Launchkey 25 and Launchpad were both positioned within arms reach — nestled among his drum pads, sound modules and cymbals — giving him complete control over his Ableton session.

Keith Harris: "It's important to have lots of control at my fingertips. My Launchkey 25 packs loads of features into a compact size, and the Launchpad is my main session controller. Both are really robust: perfect for life on the road." But it's not just on stage where Novation influences Keith's work. "I love Novation gear. In my studio, I have the Impulse and SL MkII controllers, plus the MiniNova. They are an irreplaceable part of my powerhouse."
